Complete Confidence In God Results In A Rewarding Life

My heart has confidence in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart! Psalm 108:1

We’ve all had days when nothing seemed to go right, with heaviness weighing on our hearts. King David found the answer to relieving that heaviness by putting his confidence in God.

We all know that life will let us down at one time or another. But no matter what hurdles stand in our way, we can rest assured that God won’t let us down.

Did you notice how David responded to the faithfulness of the Lord? He said, “No wonder I sing praises to Him. No wonder my heart puts confidence in God.” But he didn’t praise God alone.

Wake up, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. Psalm 108:2

David commanded the lyre and harp to awaken once before. He did in Psalm 57 while fleeing from King Saul. David made a declaration of his confidence in God and His glory.

My heart has confidence in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises! Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! Psalm 57:7-8

Approaching God in confidence begins on the inside of us. That’s why David referred to his heart as having confidence. His awakened heart also stirs the instruments to praise God with him.

In both Psalms, others heard the evidence of his confidence as he sang praises to God. He proclaimed them loud enough for the nations to hear him.

I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. Psalm 108:3

    Let Everyone Hear

As the Psalmists praised and worshiped God, they didn’t mumble it under their breath. Neither did they only offer it within the church walls. No, they wanted everyone to hear them.

    • Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth! Sing about the glory of his name! Tell the world how glorious he is. Psalm 66:1-2
    • Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor. Let all the earth tremble before him. Tell all the nations, “The Lord reigns!” Psalm 96:9-10
    • Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the earth and all living things join in. Let the rivers clap their hands in glee! Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the Lord. Psalm 98:7-9
    • Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Psalm 100:1-2

Let’s not timidly come before God, instead come before Him with confidence and praise. David continued in Psalm 108 by measuring God’s love and faithfulness the only way he knew how.

For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Psalm 108:4

As a child, I could come up with some very inquisitive questions. One time, I asked my mom how far up was. She had a hard time answering that question. David didn’t know its answer either.

But he did use it as his standard of measurement. He said God’s unfailing love exceeded the height of the heavens. Then he exalted God even higher than that.

Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth. Psalm 108:5

    Confidence in God

Do You Have Confidence in God?

So, we just read about the confidence David had in God. How do we know, or how can we gauge if we have that type of confidence? In other words, what does confidence in God look like?

God-confidence means not placing our trust in our own abilities or accomplishments but rather in God’s power and guidance.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6

God-confidence means that instead of depending on ourselves, we look to Him first. It means His Word fuels our faith when the adversary tries to stir up fears within us.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Psalm 27:1-2

God-confidence serves to strengthen our faith and deepen our relationship with God.

But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. And we are confident in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we commanded you. 2 Thessalonians 3:3-4

James wrote an epistle on how to strengthen our faith, which will build our confidence in God. As our faith grows, so does our confidence, and vice versa.

For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. James 1:3-4

    Confidence in God

    Trust God

So trust God for the small things and anything and everything that comes your way. Then, your developed endurance will include confidence in God that will change your life.

We find a distinct difference between Christian confidence and worldly confidence. Worldly confidence often relies on external factors or human achievements. God wants us to rely on Him.

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made God their hope and confidence. Jeremiah 17:5,7

Oh Lord our God, help us to grow to have complete confidence in you. Then we can say, “No wonder I can sing your praises with all of my heart!”

Sehnsucht in the Blue Ridge Mountains — Nicole O'Meara

Sehnsucht is hard to put into words, as can be seen in my painfully limited ability to describe what I felt at a vista in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some call it joy. Some called it wistful longing for something you can’t explain. It has been called melancholy and nostalgia. It is all of that, and mo
