Why it Matters to the New Covenant Believer
God is a God who speaks. Over and over throughout the Old and New Testaments, it is plain that people are hearing from God. And God is so gracious, so desirous of relationship with His creation that He stoops to speak to humanity in a language they will comprehend.
If God is speaking by using imagery that we don’t fully understand, it behooves us to LEARN IT! That’s where understanding COVENANT comes in. It is the imagery God has used from the beginning of time, imagery with which we have become unfamiliar. Because the language of “covenant” was so well understood in ancient times, it is one of the main foundational understandings that communication was built upon between God and humanity. And yet, it isn’t very well understood to us in modern times.
So why should we care about a concept that is somewhat foreign to us now? Because throughout history – from the Garden of Eden to the cross and even to the Lord’s return – covenant is the concept being spoken. And once we understand covenant, we are better equipped to understand concepts such as our authority as believers, the gift of the name of Jesus and the armor of God.
Covenant was the beautiful way God spoke in spite of the fact that He had no need to prove that He was trustworthy enough to keep His end of the covenant. He actually humbled Himself to come into an agreement as if He were capable of not keeping His word. He did this with the sole purpose of proving to humankind that He would keep His word.
Do you see how fantastic this is? The God of the universe, who created everything, could have just said, “You have to trust Me. I refuse to promise anything. I refuse to put Myself at risk by committing to anything or by entering into a contractual relationship with humankind when death is the consequence for breaking that contract. You’ll just have to take my word for it: I’m good and trustworthy.”
Instead, as though He were on equal footing with humans, He made binding, unalterable, no loophole contracts with humans. Why? Because He values your heart more than your actions, your trust more than your blind obedience. He proved His perfection though He could never be anything but perfect. You can trust God because you can see His track record. And that is what the Bible is, after all: God’s track record of keeping His covenants.
As believers in Christ, those who have received His sacrifice as our substitution, we have entered into a covenant agreement with God, whether we realized that was what salvation meant or not. We are covenant partners with God. And there are elements of covenant, nine generally accepted steps, to creating a covenant that also have tremendous implications for us as covenant partners with God.
