Defining Spiritual Growth Based On The Bible

Among other concepts of the Christian religion, spiritual growth is considered to be very important. Many people define this concept through acquiring knowledge, going to the Church often, or taking part in various religious activities. Though all these aspects can be helpful, the Bible shows something deeper concerning the definition of spiritual growth. According to the Bible, spiritual growth is not defined by a level of a person's knowledge of God but rather by his/her resemblance to Jesus Christ.

Generally, according to the Bible, spiritual growth always comes from God in a believer's life. It starts with faith in Christ, then continues with the obedience of His teachings, and ends up with the transformation of the heart of the believer. Thus, spiritual growth is not an external phenomenon but rather an internal one, which is associated with changing thoughts and actions.

Spiritual Growth Starts with a Living Relationship with Christ

The Bible is emphatic in declaring that any form of spiritual growth must come from Christ. One cannot grow spiritually without Christ because Christ alone is the fountain of all spiritual life. From the Book of John 15:5:

"I am the vine; you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit: for without me, you can do nothing."

From this analogy, it shows that Christians draw their power, wisdom, and spiritual food through being connected to Christ. Without being connected to the vine, no branch will be able to bear fruit, just like Christians will not be able to achieve any spiritual growth without having a close relationship with Christ.

Through prayer, studying God's Word, believing in God's promises, and keeping God's commandments, one can nurture one's living relationship with Christ.

Fruitfulness is the Product of Staying Connected to Christ

Abiding in Christ affects all areas of life. The more a believer lives close to Christ, the more that believer will see his life filled with Christlike qualities such as patience, humility, and holiness.

Spiritual maturity is a process, not a one-time event, according to the Bible. Each stage of a Christian’s life presents a chance to grow in faith and to be conformed into Christ's image.

Becoming More Like Christ According to the Bible

Another definition of spiritual growth according to the Bible is becoming more like Christ. It is not the aim of God to just make people become religious but to transform them into the likeness of His Son.

The Bible says in Romans 8:29 that believers are "conformed to the image of his Son." This transformation covers all aspects of life. It influences the way people think, talk, forgive others, serve people, and react to adverse situations.

Moreover, the Apostle Paul calls believers in Romans 12:2 to do the following:

"You must not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind."

Real spiritual growth starts from inside. When the Word of God makes a renewal of one's mind, one's attitude and actions will change. Christians will learn to appreciate what God appreciates and avoid what takes them farther away from Him.

Spiritual Maturity Can Be Identified through the Fruit of the Spirit

Whereas material success is not used by the Bible to measure spiritual maturity, spiritual maturity can be measured based on an individual's character. According to Galatians 5:22-23, the fruit of the Holy Spirit is:

"The virtues of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."

Such fruits cannot be developed through human efforts alone. As an individual surrenders his life to God's spirit, he develops the above fruits through time. A spiritually mature individual exhibits more love, patience, faithfulness, and self-control, among other fruits.

The existence of such fruits indicates that transformation is occurring in one's life.

Growing in Christ through His Word

The Bible serves an essential part in the process of spiritual maturity since it can teach, rebuke, exhort, and provide instructions.

In 2 Timothy 3:16–17, Paul says that all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be competent, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Meanwhile, in 1 Peter 2:2, Christians are encouraged to desire the pure spiritual milk so that they would grow in respect to their salvation. Just like physical life requires sustenance constantly, so does spiritual life.

Studying the Bible is more than collecting information. The goal of reading it is that God would shape one's heart through His words.

Spiritual Development Often Occurs Through Trials

According to the Bible, God also makes use of struggles to build His people. Though the struggle is a terrible experience, it often becomes an avenue for growth in the area of one’s faith in God.

According to James 1:2–4, trials lead to perseverance, which leads to spiritual maturity for Christians.

Christians are encouraged not to regard trials as occasions when God has left them, but to know that whatever they go through, God is building them up through all these things.

Suffering makes believers patient and humble, and gives them endurance and confidence in God’s faithfulness.

Many people look for spiritual growth resources because they want more than inspiration; they want practices, community, and guidance that help them mature.

A Never-Ending Process Of Transformation

Biblically, spiritual development is viewed as a lifelong process, rather than something that can be achieved in this lifetime. It does not happen instantly that one attains perfection in one's spiritual walk. God has the patience to continue His work every day.

As it is written in 2 Peter 3:18, believers are supposed to grow "in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." Growing includes continuous learning of Christ through His grace, which enables overcoming weaknesses.

Each day is an opportunity for believers to trust in God, forgive, be merciful, and live the way He wants them to live.
