Facing Imperfection's Shame Realistically - Denise Pass

Shame RX: Bad Luck had Nothing to Do With Your Shame.

“The one thing I ask of the Lordthe thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.” —Psalm 27:4

I’ve read this verse many times over the past 30 years, but this time I got something new. Don’t you love that? Of course I feel like I get something new every day when I read God’s word. He is alive and His word is, too.

But here we see in this verse that the Psalmist is longing to dwell in the presence of God—meditating and delighting in His perfection.

So often we feel shame for being less than perfect, which is, in fact, what we are. It is not like this truth is hidden from all. We feel shame for our imperfection because we become deceived into thinking we should be perfect and compare ourselves to others, vying to “arrive”. The enemy comes in with condemnation for good measure when we fall short.  Again.

We so easily forget that Christ already is our perfection. God alone is perfect. When we pursue being perfect instead of being holy, we engage in a fleshly pursuit that becomes idolatry – a focus on self. But when we look to our perfect God and worship Him, we become more like Him.

Let go of shame from your imperfections. Embrace God’s holiness, instead. When we confess and renounce our weaknesses and seek refuge in His word, we begin to walk in honor, instead.
