God’s Building of New Jerusalem

Hebrews 11:10 tells us that Abraham “eagerly waited for the city which has the foundations, whose Architect and Builder is God.” This says that God is the builder of New Jerusalem.

In Matthew 16:18 the Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “I will build My church.” Here the Lord is the builder of the church, the predecessor of New Jerusalem. Jesus is God incarnated in man; He is the Son of God and He is God (Heb. 1:5, 8).New Jerusalem

God in Jesus is building and He is doing this through all His people. Ephesians 4:11 says that Christ gave gifted members to His Body. Verse 4:12 reveals that these gifted people are “for the perfecting of the saints unto the work of the ministry, unto the building up of the Body of Christ.”

It is not only the gifted members who do the building; they perfect all the members to do the building work.

Further, verse 4:15b-16 continues, “…the Head, Christ, out from whom all the Body, being joined together and being knit together through every joint of the rich supply and through the operation in the measure of each one part, causes the growth of the Body unto the building up of itself in love.” Each one part, every member, participates in the building.

New Jerusalem is the end result of all God’s building work. It includes both God’s Old Testament people, exemplified by Abraham in Hebrews 11, and God’s New Testament people, the church.

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
