    God’s Promises For Courage

This Bible study is a continuation of the series on God’s promises. In previous articles we looked at:

Last week we studied God’s Promises For Contentment.

In this article and the next 2 weeks we will continue to look at some of the many of God’s wonderful promises in His word. There are literally thousands of promises in God’s word the Bible. Because God is perfectly faithful, His promises are actually guarantees.

This week we will dive into God’s word and look at God’s Promises for Courage.

    God’s Promises for Courage

    Following Jesus Takes Courage

God does not want His people to be afraid. God wants His people and His church to be Spirit-filled, strong and courageous, victorious, and fruitful. This is the type of Christian and church that glorify God.

To truly follow and obey Jesus, it takes love, faith, trust, and courage. There are things that Jesus calls and commands us to do that require us to leave our comfort zones. And to step out in faith and trust that Jesus will help and empower you to do. Being a “fisher of men” or a witness to tell others about Jesus is a great example.

Matthew 4:19 – “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

It takes courage to step out and obey Jesus and tell others about Jesus and salvation. Especially if you are shy or afraid to do it. But we cannot give in to our fear, or that will cause us to disobey Jesus.

    God’s Promises For Courage

Here are some of the many of God’s promises about courage from God’s word the Bible.

Psalm 27:14 – “Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.

Psalm 37:3 – “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

Isaiah 40:29 – “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

More of God’s Promises For Courage

Isaiah 43:1 – “But now, this is what the Lord says—. he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

2 Kings 6:16 – “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.

Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you ? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

In Joshua 1:9 God is reminding Joshua that he and the people of Israel would need to be courageous in order to fight their enemy enemies and take possession of the Promised Land. Even though God had promised His people the Promised Land going way back to the days of Abraham, the people of Israel and especially Joshua their leader needed to trust God. That He is faithful and will fulfill His promise.

And they needed to have the courage to fight against their strong enemies that possessed the Promised Land. And the strength and courage to not get discouraged and give up.

Courage to Obey Jesus And Share Him With Others

This is especially important for us today as we obey Jesus and go out to face our enemy and reach lost people, and help believers to grow (make disciples). When we are committed to obey what Jesus calls and commands us to do, we will face a lot of spiritual warfare from the enemy. It is tempting to get discouraged and give up, so the opposition and oppression and battles will go away.

2 Corinthians 2:14 – “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.”

Pray to Jesus For Courage To Follow & Obey His Call

If you lack courage to obey Jesus’ call and commands to share the Gospel (Matthew 4:19) and make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20), like most of us do, then call out to Jesus for help. The truth is that most people are afraid to tell others about Jesus. But we still need to follow and obey Jesus. If you ask, Jesus will give you all the courage you need to be a faithful and fruitful witness for Him. And power, and even words, so that you can have the joy and privilege of joining Him in His kingdom work and mission.

Ephesians 6:19-20 “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Acts 4:29 – “Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

Acts 4:31 – “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

May we all, by God’s grace, become fearless and courageous and fruitful servants that He can use in mighty ways.
