Good Advice for Evangelism

Here is some good advice for evangelism and practical counsel from mature evangelist Larry Clayton. He has faithfully served the Lord for over 70 years.

In 2023, at the Southwide Baptist Fellowship it was our privilege to honor three faithful gospel workers: Dr. Don Sisk, Dr. Charles Keen, and Dr. Larry Clayton. These men have over 180 years of combined experience in the Lord’s work. They have labored faithfully in countries around the world to get the gospel of Christ to the lost. I admire each of them and thank God for their example.

On Tuesday of the annual gathering we host a luncheon for evangelists and their wives (learn more HERE). It is always a sweet time of fellowship and a reunion of sorts for those engaged in the work of the gospel. That year, I asked Larry Clayton if he would be willing to chat with us about evangelism. There is so much truth and experience in the minds and hearts of these long tenured gospel warriors!

His thoughts were so simple and so profound. I asked Dr. Clayton if he would allow me to pass them along to you and he was thrilled for us to do so.

Here is wise and practical counsel from a mature evangelist…

    1. Keep it fun. Involve your whole family in the ministry and make it enjoyable. If you don’t hate it, your kids won’t! You have to work at it, but it can be done.
    2. Live on the level of God’s supply. Stay out of debt and be good stewards.
    3. Don’t pick fights. Stay on the gospel and what God has given you to do.
    4. Don’t just preach subjects, preach the Bible! It is not enough to talk about the Bible; we must expose what it says.
    5. Keep your mind clean. Stay on guard and choose carefully what goes into your mind. In the words of Philippians 4:8, “Think on these things…”

As Brother Clayton expounded on each of these truths our hearts were warmed and warned. Meditate on each of them and ask God to help you be faithful in the work He has given you to do. “With good advice make war.”

(Brother Clayton has compiled a study on what Scripture teaches about the work of the evangelist. You may download his notes HERE.)
