Holy and Spiritual for God’s Building

The Bible concludes in Revelation 21–22 with a city built by God in Christ with the cooperation of God’s people. This is New Jerusalem. John tells us in 21:2, “I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”

God’s purpose is the building, and this can be proved by the end of Revelation. All God’s work throughout the centuries and the generations is for the building up of the New Jerusalem. What comes forth at the end of the Bible is not a group of spiritual persons or holy people but a built-up city.*

New JerusalemGod desires that we be holy and spiritual. One expression of this desire is 1 Peter 1:15, “according to the Holy One who called you, you yourselves also be holy in all your manner of life.” However, the goal is not holiness; the goal is to be holy for the building of “the holy city, New Jerusalem.”

Likewise, we need to be spiritual; to live and walk in spirit for the building. Ephesians 2:22 states “you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in spirit.” This dwelling place is New Jerusalem, a city that is spiritual, not physical.

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
