Is There a Monster in Your Closet? – Pathways to Organization

    Beautiful girl thinking what to dress in walk-in closetFor most of us, there really is a monster in our closets and it’s called “out-of-season-clothes”!

    I’m an organizer and I still have a struggle twice a year to get to the closet and sort it all out.  To be honest, sometimes it takes me even a few weeks to pull up the energy as well as find the time to get it done.  And then once I’ve finished with the clothes I realize I’m still not finished.  I have to also do the shoes, belts, etc. 

    It’s a nightmare!!! 

        

    Action Plan    

     Here are some tips that hopefully will bring your closet back safe and sound:

    1. Set a section of time on your calendar when you can commit to doing the work.  Nothing is worse than starting a large project like this and then running out of time with clothes everywhere.
    2. Start in one section of your closet and literally pull out each item and ask:
      1. Do you want to wear it next season or are you ready to give it away?
      2. Or, is it nice enough to sell at a consignment shop or garage sale?
      3. Does it need washing, dry cleaning, or mending?
      4. Do you want to store it away or leave it in your closet but in the back?
    3.  Start making piles designated to what needs to be done to the item.
    4. If most of your clothes need to be stored, hopefully you have an extra closet, attic or basement. 
    5. If you store in an attic or basement, you will need to purchase a wardrobe rack that is covered.  Target has some great ones.  You can also use a trunk, vacuum plastic bags (at Bed, Bath and Beyond), ventilated under-bed bins or regular bins which you can stack.
    6. As you begin clearing out  the closet, have pen and paper close by.  You can write down clothes you realize you need to buy or any organizational closet items.  Also, it’s a great opportunity to clean shelves and straighten drawers. 

    I know cleaning out a closet can be a hassle but when you start to get dressed in the morning you will realize how much easier it is when everything you need is at your fingertips!
