Jesus' Resurrection, The Most Important Event Of Christianity

Resurrection Sunday, or Easter, is the climax of Holy Week. Jesus’ resurrection is the most important event of Christianity. The very foundation of ALL Christian doctrine hinges on the truth of this event.

Several women (Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Salome, and Mary the mother of James) had prepared the burial spices the day before. Then went to the tomb very early in the morning.

Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. On the way they were asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” Mark 16:2-3

When they got there, what they thought would be a problem, wasn’t.

But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside. Mark 16:4

As they looked inside the tomb, there was no dead body to be found at all. Jesus resurrection had happen just like His said. Let’s see what they found there.

So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. Luke 24:3-4

One might ask, where were the soldiers? Pilate assigned a unit of Roman Soldiers to keep people like these women out of the tomb. By the time the women got there, they vacated the area! Matthew recorded why they left.

Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Matthew 28:2-4

Jesus Wasn’t There!

So, when the women went inside the tomb and saw two men there and they were terrified. Terrified enough, that they bowed with their faces to the ground. These men asked them a straightforward question. But, they also gave them the answer to their question.

“Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.”  Luke 24:5-7

Two days before this, Grief filled the hearts of these women. For them and us, when someone dies, they are gone. Funerals are often a time of memories and closure. That’s what these women were on their way to do. Then it dawned on them.

Then they remembered that he had said this. So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened.  Luke 24:8-9

Here’s how the gospel of Mark recorded what these men said.

Tell Peter About Jesus’ Resurrection

He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.” Mark 16:6-7

I find it interesting that he singled Peter out. Tell His disciples, including Peter? Did you ever wonder why? Think about it. The last thing that Peter did before the death of Jesus was to deny Him and then run and hide. When he heard that Jesus’ body wasn’t there, he had to see it for himself.

The story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened. Luke 24:11-12

The story sounds like nonsense to many and even sometimes to us. Peter, however, went to see for himself. Thomas later had some doubts but when Jesus appeared to him they quickly vanished. Listen to what Jesus told him after Thomas touched Him.

Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”  John 20:29

Do you believe? Good! Because you believe without actually seeing Jesus, you are very blessed!
