Jesus Said, “I Will Build” (1)

Matthew 16:18 records the Lord Jesus saying “I will build My church.” The ultimate result of His building is New Jerusalem. We need to look through the epistles to see how He is accomplishing this building so that we could realize how New Jerusalem comes forth.

New JerusalemFirst, the church is the house, the household, the family of God. “The house of God, which is the church of the living God” (1 Tim. 3:15). The Greek word may be translated house or household (the people living together in a house).

Also, the church is the corporate Body of Christ. Ephesians 1:22b-23a—”the church, which is His Body.” To build the church is to build the house of God and to build the Body of Christ.

Ephesians 4:11 says about Christ “He Himself gave some as apostles and some as prophets and some as evangelists and some as shepherds and teachers.” Verse 12 shows us that these gifted members of His Body are “for the perfecting of the saints unto the work of the ministry, unto the building up of the Body of Christ.”

Christ gave the gifted members, lives in them, and operates through them to perfect all the members for building His Body unto New Jerusalem.
