Joshua: Did the sun actually stood still?

Joshua: Did the sun actually stood still?

Posted on January 19, 2013 Updated on January 18, 2013

Joshua 10:12-13 – Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lorddelivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 – And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

  1. Bible critics contend that this passage is not rational because the sun and the moon are permanently stationary.
  2. They contend that it is the earth that actually rotates round the sun and moon.
  3. The Bible did not say the sun and moon were rotating and suddenly stood still.
  4. If you red Joshua 10:13 carefully, we shall realise that what happened was that day light was elongated.
  5. The simple meaning of the passage was that day light was prolonged and nightfall did not occur at the command of Joshua.
  6. The prolonged day was an advantage for the Israelites because it would have been moredifficult for the battle to be fought at night
