Let Me Tell You Who I Am and Who You Are

Once, a young girl named Martha Taft was asked to introduce herself to her elementary school classmates. She stood up with self-assurance and said, “My name is Martha Bowers Taft. My great-grandfather was president of the United States. My grandfather was a United States senator. My daddy is the ambassador to Ireland. And I am a Brownie.”

I love her confidence! Can’t you just see that little girl standing straight and sure? I wonder what my elementary-age self would have said if I were asked who I was. I wonder what my adult self would say.

For years, I had no idea who I really was. As a young adult, I would have said, “I am a wife, mother, Christian, daughter, dental hygienist, and writer.” And all that would have been true, but that’s not really who I am. It took me years to understand that I am not defined by what I do or the relationships I have. I am defined by God … and so are you.

While I was steeped in insecurity, inferiority, and inadequacy, a mentor asked me to go through the New Testament and write down everything about who God said I was. Here are 15 of them:

Matthew 6:26 I am valuable to God.

John 15:16 I am chosen and appointed by Christ to go and bear fruit.

Romans 8:1 I am free from condemnation.

Romans 8:17 I am a child of God and a co-heir with Christ.

Romans 8:37 I am more than a conqueror through Christ.

Romans 15:7 I am accepted by Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16 I have the mind of Christ.

I Corinthians 3:16 I am a temple of God.  His Spirit lives in me.

1 Corinthians 6:11 I am washed, justified, and sanctified through Christ.

Ephesians1:1 I am a saint. (Saint means “set apart for holy use.)

Ephesians 1:3 I am blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Ephesians 1:5 I am adopted into God’s family.

Ephesians 1:7 I am redeemed and forgiven through Christ’s blood.

Ephesians 1:11 I am chosen by God.

Colossians 1:22 I am holy in God’s sight, without blemish and free of accusation.

Honestly, I knew the verses already. The problem was, I just didn’t believe they were true about me. Yes, I was saved; there was no doubt about it. But that teenager weighed down with a low self-perception from my past simply became an adult Christian weighed down with low self-perception in the present.

With the list in my hand, God asked me a question, one He is asking you right now: Do you believe I tell the truth? So do you believe you are who I say you are? My answer was yes. I hope yours is too.

Right now, you may have many titles attached to your name. But remember this: You are a chosen, anointed, appointed, holy, and dearly loved child of God who is equipped by the Father, enveloped by the Son, and empowered by the Spirit.

Now friend, go about your day with the confidence of a woman who knows who she is and where her power comes from!

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your child. Help me always remember that I am who You say I am—set apart for holy sue and dearly loved. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Let’s have some fun. Leave a comment that says, “My name is (Your name) and I am a __________! “

    When Comparison Kills Confidence

If there’s one thing I know it’s this: The measuring stick will get you stuck! Comparison is the devil’s tool that has stopped many of us gals from stepping into our God-given destinies…and it’s time to stop! Comparison has been a problem since the beginning of time. Cain compared himself to Abel, and we know how that story turned out. Read more...

    Can I Trust God

I hopped up on the counter at the soda fountain and placed my five-year-old feet on the spinning stool in front of me. Dad sipped on a Coke and talked to the lady behind the counter with the red-and-white-striped apron tied around her waist. “This is my little girl,” Daddy said with a smile. “She’s a little monkey.” “Why, Read more...

God is Still Writing Your Story

There have been times when my heart ached because of a difficult or disappointing situation: a bad decision that led to painful season, an unexpected happenstance that created an unresolved circumstance, a health issue that hung on for far too long. A chapter that I did not like. Have you ever felt that way too? The Shunammite woman in the Old Testament had both good and bad chapters recorded in 2 Kings 4. Read more...

    The Other Side of Grief

I’ll admit, this has been a hard week for me. I’ve been grieving the loss of Charlie Kirk, who was killed on September tenth in front of his family and young supporters. Videos of him standing up for Biblical principles and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ flood every news and social media outlet. My tears have spilled. Read more...

Loving Messy People As God Loves Messy Me

As I sat on my screened-in porch early one morning, I was taken aback with the beauty surrounding me. I held a steamy cup of coffee in my hand and placed my open, well-worn Bible in my lap. As if on cue, as had been our routine for the past several weeks, a visitor hopped from the shrubbery and onto the night-cooled patio. Read more...
