“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband” (Eph 5:33).

If you consider the command for wives to submit to their husbands like unto Christ in Ephesians 5:22 and reverence their husbands in the above scripture, it will become obvious that God wants the wife to regard her husband as a small ‘lord’ just as Jesus Christ is her Lord. No wonder Sarah was brought out as an example of a godly woman who was subject to her husband Abraham, to the point of addressing him as ‘lord’.

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.-Ephesians 5-33, ESV – Loved, chosen, & empowered

Usually, lords are to be feared, respected, honoured and obeyed. The orders of a high court judge are not trivialized. His word is law while he sits on the judgement seat. Jesus as the Lord of lords must be obeyed by all and sundry, including all earthly judges, because the final judgement has been handed over to Him.

In the same way, the wife should see, accept and treat her head – husband as lord. The way some wives set the dinning table for their husbands shows they have no regards for his person. If you leave the house maid to be the one always giving your husband food even when you are around, are you not suggesting that you are too big to serve him?

The truth is, if you can obey the scripture, you will be sowing a seed that will yield a good harvest. The way you treat your husband – whether as lord or as your subject will determine how he will treat you. Take him as your lord- as your king, and he will treat you as his wonderful queen. Submit to him in all things and you will find out that you will be the one ruling.

He will approve your suggestions and implement most of your good ideas. If you can honour and fear him, he will embarrass you with praise and grant your desires. If you submit totally to him, he will feel indebted to you and will want to please you by all means. How do you treat your husband? After returning from official assignments, you should humbly and lovingly welcome him, help him change his clothes, present a sumptuous meal and let him talk out his day’s experience.

Make him to relax on your chest and give him words of encouragement. If he knows he will be treated as a king at home, he will always look forward to coming home. But if he knows he will come and face naggings, fights, and complaints, he will always look forward to leaving the house.
