Names of God: Our very present help

Do you know that God has so many names?

If we want to grow our connection with God, we must start with knowing all His names so we know what to call Him in every season we face.

As Christ’s followers, it is vital to understand the names of God as they give us ideas about His attributes and connection with His people.

Once we discover all His names, we will be surprised how God is sovereign and cares for His children.

Besides, just like in marriage, we appreciate our spouse more when we know more about them. The same is true with knowing God, the more we discover amazing things about Him, the more we appreciate and trust Him.

Names of God

Each of God’s names reveals various aspects of His character. Diving into God’s name would help us trust Him in times of trouble.

Also, knowing His name will give us the wisdom to understand deeply who He is.

Here are God’s different names to help us know Him more.

Adonai

Adonai means “Lord” or “Master,” which is derived from the Hebrew word “Adon.”

It signifies God’s authority and power over all creation. When we address God as “Adonai,” we recognize His Lordship.

Also, when calling him by this name, it means an act of surrender and submission to His guidance and direction.

Another interesting fact about His name is that in the Old Testament, Adonai is used more when God deals with the Gentiles, while YHWH is used more often when He deals with the Jews.

Thus, we could win God’s favor when we acknowledge His Lordship. So whenever we want to revere His sovereignty, call Him Adonai.

2 Samuel 7:18-20 says, “Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human!“ What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord.”

Elohim

Sometimes, we may doubt God’s power and strength because of our many troubles. Yet, remember His name, “Elohim,” which means God is mighty and strong. This name depicts His supremacy and faithfulness in His promises to His people.

Moreover, Elohim is the first name of God noted in the Bible. It emphasized the role of God as a Creator. This name could remind us that He is the one who created the universe and everything in it.

Elohim reminds us that there is nothing our God cannot do in His hands. Our God is so much greater and more powerful than all our sufferings. Therefore, we can call upon Him to give us strength and power to overcome and rejoice amidst trials.

Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.

El Roi

Have you ever wondered if God could see everything? El Roi is another God’s name to emphasize His omniscience. This name also reveals God’s compassionate love for His people.

El Roi means “The God who sees.” It is derived from the Hebrew words “El,” meaning “God,” and “Roi,” meaning “To see.”

God sees your pain and everything you are going through. He is not blind in all your struggles and grief from the death of your loved ones.

In Genesis Chapter 16, Hagar used the name El Roi because she realized that God sees her miseries under her master Sarah the wife of Abraham. Sarah could not bear a child and took Hagar, her maidservant, to sleep with her husband.

Yet, after knowing that she is pregnant, Sarah mistreats her.

Nevertheless, in Genesis 16:13, “Hagar gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me, ” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

No matter who you are, God sees you. He is there willing to rescue and bless you when you pray to Him.

Jehovah ‘Ezri

Jehovah ‘Ezri means “The Lord is my helper.” This came from the Hebrew word “Azar” meaning “to help” or “to aid.”

God is very present and helps in every season of life. We cannot do anything without Him.

In times of depression, you can call upon our Lord, Jehova ‘Ezri, to emphasize that God is our helper. He delivers us from all our troubles and failures.

Psalms 30:10 says, “Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me: Lord, be my helper (Jehovah ‘Ezri)”

We must humble ourselves before the Lord and accept that we need a helper to overcome all trials. Our pride can only make our situations more difficult to handle, and we will lose the battle.

Jehova Jireh

God has a name to magnify that He is the Lord that provides all our needs. Jehova Jireh came from the Hebrew verb “ra’ah,” meaning “to see” or “to provide.”

Abraham gave the name Jehova Jireh when God offered a ram as a substitute offering for his son Isaac, whom God had asked to sacrifice. This name reminds us that God is not blind and deaf to our needs.

Our Jehova Jireh provides in His perfect timing. It is never too late nor too early so we have nothing to worry about. We have nothing to be afraid of, for God knows our needs. We only need to be still and know He is God, our Jehovah Jireh.

Genesis 22:14 says, “So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day, it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided. ”

Jehovah Machsi

The word “Machsi” came from the Hebrew word “machaseh,” which means “refuge” or “shelter”

God’s name highlights His role as our safe haven in depression and sadness. No other name could give us comfort and protection like our Jehova Machsi.

Whenever we feel hopeless and upset, especially for those longing for their family members who died, remember God is our Jehovah Machsi.

Besides, whenever we feel so tired about fighting all our battles in life, we can always find rest in God’s presence. Those who trust Him with their pain and suffering will find comfort and peace.

Psalm 91:9 says, “If you say, “The Lord s my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling,”

Jehovah Magen

Jehovah Magen means “The Lord is my shield,” which came from the Hebrew word “Magen,” meaning shield or protector.

God is our defender and deliverer of evil. It is so exhausting to fight against our enemy; we need our Lord to protect us from challenges and harm caused by satan.

We cannot defeat satan alone, he can devour the wonderful future and blessings that God has prepared for us. We cannot protect our family against the schemes of satan.

Thus, we need our greatest defender, Jehovah Magen, to protect us. With God, we are more than conquerors.

Call upon the name of the Lord

These are only a few of God’s amazing names to emphasize His character and attributes. Whenever we are in trouble, pain, or suffering, we only need to call upon the name of God, and He is there, willing to rescue us.

There is no other name that could help us in times of trouble than the name of God. So it is crucial for us to discover His names so we could trust in Him with our whole lives.
