New Jerusalem, Habitation of the God of Peace (9)
New Jerusalem is a city in Christ and Christ Himself is the peace of the whole city and of the entire new creation. Our foretaste of this complete peace is seen in the concluding blessings of many epistles.
In Ephesians 6:23 peace is to us “from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” We should not look to any other source for peace. The Triune God is the only faithful and dependable source, from now to eternity in New Jerusalem.
The blessing in 2 Thessalonians 3:16 is “Now the Lord of peace Himself give you peace continually in every way. The Lord be with you all.” Again, the Lord is the source of our peace; He Himself is the peace. And He gives this peace at all times and in all ways, corresponding to His unsearchably rich nature.
First Peter 5:14 says, “Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ.” Peace from the Father and the Lord flows when we love all the believers equally with God’s love. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
To conclude this series, the name Jerusalem means foundation of peace or habitation of peace. This peace is the Triune God Himself. He is “the God of peace” and Jesus told us “in Me you have peace.” We experience the peace of New Jerusalem today as we experience the Giver of peace, He who is our peace.
