New Jerusalem in the Mystery of God

New Jerusalem and our life there is described in Revelation 21:1 to 22:5. It is also briefly mentioned as “the Jerusalem above” in Galatians 4:26 and as “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” in Hebrews 12:22.

New JerusalemAlthough New Jerusalem is described, it is presently a mystery—some interpret it spiritually and others give a variety of physical explanations. It is a mystery now because God’s purpose and its development in this age is a mystery.

Mark 4:11 is about “the mystery of the kingdom of God.” Since New Jerusalem is part of God’s kingdom, it is part of this mystery.

To prepare for New Jerusalem we are being inwardly transformed, conformed to the image of God’s Firstborn Son. This is a mystery today (1 Cor. 15:51) but when the Lord Jesus returns in glory we will be openly changed from corruption to incorruption and from mortality to immortality (15:49-54).

This mystery has only been made known to those God has chosen; to all others what God is doing today is mysterious. Luke 8:10 shows this, “To you [Jesus’ disciples] it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are in parables, in order that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.”

In this age New Jerusalem is part of “the mystery of God” (1 Cor. 2:1), “the mystery of His will” (Eph. 1:9), “the mystery of Christ” (Eph. 3:4). and “the mystery of the faith” (1 Tim. 3:9). The great mystery in Ephesians 5:32 is “Christ and the church,” the precursor of New Jerusalem.
