New Jerusalem is the Consummation of God’s New Testament Building Work

The first mention of building in the New Testament is the Lord’s declaration in Matthew 16:18, “I will build My church.” The consummation of this building work is the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21–22.

The New Jerusalem is a building. First Corinthians 3:9 says that the church is God’s cultivated land, God’s farm, to grow something, and also God’s building. The New Jerusalem as God’s holy city is God’s universal building for His new creation out of His old creation (1 Cor. 3:9b; 2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 6:15). The New Jerusalem is the building of God’s new creation.*

The Lord’s building work toward New Jerusalem is in His believers. Colossians 2:6-7 exhorts us, “As therefore you have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, having been rooted and being built up in Him…” Jesus Christ has become our life and He is doing His building work inside of us, building us together to be God’s habitation and Christ’s bride.
