New Jerusalem Seen in Ephesians, 20
Ephesians 5:22-33 speaks about husbands and wives, but they are for a picture. Verse 32 gives the key point of this part of Ephesians 5: “This mystery is great, but I speak with regard to Christ and the church.” Christ and the church as the universal, eternal, divine-human married couple are the focus of these verses.
Christ and the church in this age will be Christ and New Jerusalem in eternity. The important point now is the cleansing “by the washing of the water in the word” (v. 5:26).
This washing is expressed in 1 Thessalonians 2:13 as “the word of God, which also operates in you who believe.” Also in Hebrews 4:12 “the word of God is living and operative…piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit…and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
When the word pierces to divide us and discern us, we say amen. We should respond positively to God’s word, not holding our preferences and our way of doing things. We take His choice and drop our choice. This takes us onward to New Jerusalem.
