New Jerusalem—a Mutual Indwelling

Recently a series presented verses about God’s New Testament Building which ultimately is New Jerusalem. One section of that series is God’s Building is the Mutual Abiding of God in His People and they in God.

The verses in that section begin with John 14:20, “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” That day is the day the Lord was resurrected and imparted Himself into His disciples to regenerate them. Then John 15:4, “Abide in Me and I in you.”

In my Bible reading I came to 1 John and saw more verses on this mutual abiding – 4:13, 15, 16. Verse 4:13 tells us, “we know that we abide in Him and He in us, that He has given to us of His Spirit.” This shows the mutual abiding, the mutual indwelling, is spiritual.

This mutual abiding begins when we believe in the Lord Jesus, our Redeemer and Savior. Verse 15 says, “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him and he in God.”

Many other verses touch one side or the other of this indwelling:
We are in Christ: John 17:21; Romans 6:11; 8:1, 2; 12:5; 16:3, 7, 9; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 3:27-28; Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 1:28; 1 John 5:20
Christ is in us: John 14:23; 17:23; Romans 8:10; 2 Corinthians 13:5; Galatians 2:20; 4:19; Ephesians 3:17; Colossians 1:27

This mutuality will continue into New Jerusalem. It is not a physical city but is the culmination of God’s New Testament building work—His making His home in us and we growing up into Him.
