Podcast: Gratitude and Advent
Why Celebrate Advent?
Advent is a collection of traditions that is based around anticipating the coming of Christ. There is more to this season than presents and lights. Advent reminds us of the importance of community in the celebration of the coming of Christ to save His people in the gathering of friends, lighting of candles, and the singing of songs.
Christmas has very much become a commercialized holiday. Advent serves as the counter to this in the peace, calm, and rhythm of celebrating the coming of Christ. It serves as a resistance to the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
At So We Speak, we created an Advent devotional to help guide your family through your celebration of Advent.
The Church Calendar
In the church calendar, Advent marks the beginning of the year. The church calendar celebrations trace the life of Christ in his birth, life, death, and resurrection. It was created to operate similarly to how the Jewish feasts were celebrated in the Old Testament—with periods devoted to one specific aspect of Israel’s history. In the church, those specific segments of time are now devoted to the life of Christ because he is the fulfillment of the Old Testament.
