Redemption for New Jerusalem (2)

In Hebrews 9:15 Christ “is the Mediator of a new covenant, so that, death having taken place for redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, those who have been called might receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.”

New JerusalemBecause of His death we have redemption, we have God’s forgiveness. But this is merely a starting point. We also have “the promise of the eternal inheritance.” This eternal inheritance includes eternal life and participation in the eternal city New Jerusalem.

Titus 2:13b-14 declares that “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all lawlessness and purify to Himself a particular people as His unique possession, zealous of good works.” Redemption does not merely save us from the negative (“lawlessness”) but also points us to the positive (“His unique possession”).

We are God’s possession “so that you may tell out the virtues of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). Surely this “telling out”is our speaking and living today but just as surely it is the display of God’s glory in New Jerusalem.
