Righteousness & Peace in the Holy Spirit

New JerusalemJesus Christ, described by Melchizedek in Hebrews 7, is the King of righteousness and peace. His first realm of reigning is in His believers. Both John the Baptist (Matt. 3:2) and Jesus (4:17) began their proclamation, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.”

To repent is to turn from unrighteousness to the kingdom. At that time it had only “drawn near” because Jesus had not yet gone through death into resurrection, but now we have Him as the kingdom’s reality in us.

Romans 14:17 declares that “the kingdom of God is…righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” This is our inner reality now for us to live daily by walking in Spirit. If we drift off, we can confess and God is “faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

The inward reality of the the righteousness, peace, and joy of the kingdom is ours now and for eternity. The manifestation of the kingdom will be displayed when Jesus Christ comes visibly to reign over the nations beginning with the judgment in Matthew 25:31. This manifestation will be at its fullest in eternity, “new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13).

Because of absolute and unlimited righteousness the new creation and New Jerusalem will be full of peace and joy.
