Sermon: Power in the Word of God

Memorise: “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word” (Eph 5:26)

Read: 2 Samuel 23:14-17

Today’s reading has some beautiful truths we can learn from. David was in a hide out and the Philistine soldiers cordoned off the place. Then he became thirsty. He could have asked his soldiers to get him water from the neighbourhood, but he expressed his thirst for the water from a particular well by the gate of Bethlehem. One would wonder: why the water from that gate? Afterall, is water not the same everywhere?

Water is a symbol of the Word of God. Ephesians 5:26 says, “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word”. James 3:11-12 mentioned three types of water – sweet, bitter, and salty water.

In every church, a type of water is being served. If it is sweet, it will endear members to drink it and be cleansed. If it is bitter, it may repel members. If it is salty, it may affect the taste glands of the drinkers. Whether sweet, bitter or salty, the Word of God must be taken.Image result

“How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Ps 119:103). God’s words are sweet hence God commands you to hear them (Ps 141:6). Some believers have never tasted the sweetness in God’s Word. Your spiritual level or placement determines how you taste God’s Word. For instance, if you hunger and thirst after God’s Word so much, even the bitter (unpleasant) aspects will taste sweet to you (Prov 27:7).

This means that if you find God’s Word unappealing to your taste, it is because you are not hungry. When God’s Word appears bitter or uninteresting to you, you need to spend more time with it. Leave other things and just be alone – you and your Bible. Study it for hours and study it regularly. Over a period of time, your bitter taste buds will taste something sweet. When you get to the level when the Word of God is sweeter than honey to you, it will become your greatest companion.

You will find that grace is available to obey it, no matter how difficult, even when everyone else is complaining. When His Words are sweet to you, it will affect your relationship with Him. When those Words come out of your mouth as a decree, they will be established. On the other hand, some believers only obey the convenient aspects of the Word. This is wrong! The Word must be obeyed in its entirety. How is the Word tasting today?

Father, make your Word taste like honey in my mouth from today.
