The Assignment That Never Grows Old

But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called, “today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. – Hebrews 3:13
I have a list of assignments that I endeavor to accomplish every day of my life. My list includes goals such as these:
* Smile at a stranger.
* Say, “I love you,” to a friend or family member.
* Write an encouraging text or email to at least five people.
* Spend time in prayer for my pastor and those in ministry.
* Ensure that my home is both joyful and peaceful.
I have discovered that God’s will for my life is not found in the momentous accomplishments or in impressive goals reached, but it is discovered one small choice at a time.
But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called, “today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (Hebrews 3:13)
We are invited by Scripture to spend our lives in the continual and magnificent pursuit of encouraging others. An abundant life is always fashioned when we are more concerned with cheering others on their journey than we are with our own progress or comfort.
One of the most astounding aspects of sprinkling encouraging words in our daily conversations, is that words have the power to travel through time. We all likely recall critical words that were spoken to us as children. Those negative words surely discouraged our growing hearts as well as shaped a faltering self-esteem.
Conversely, we also treasure encouraging words that others have written or said to us from decades ago. The supportive and positive words that teachers, parents, and friends uttered long ago have likely bestowed a positive self-image, a “can-do” attitude, and hope for the future.
If you want to change the world, encourage someone.
If your goal in life is to make a difference, encourage someone.
If your heart feels empty, encourage someone else.
If you wonder what your assignment in life is, encourage others.
The world is aching for someone, just like you, to uplift their hearts and to boost their morale. Scripture is clear: if it is “today” then it is your turn to encourage someone else. This is an assignment that never grows old, is never out of date and will give you an unspeakable joy!

Questions for Reflection:
1. Who has encouraged you on your life journey? Perhaps you would like to thank them for their impact in your life.
2. Who needs your encouragement today? Make a list of 3-5 people who are discouraged and write them a sweet email or note.
3. Why do you think that the Bible says to encourage others daily? Why isn’t it enough to encourage someone once a week?
4. What is the benefit of encouraging others?
