The Call to be Blameless

Last summer, I traveled to Antiqua on a missions trip with my church. While there, we had the privilege of hearing an Antiguan woman speak about the political state of Antiqua and the surrounding islands. She unapologetically rejected the humanist ideology of the Left and boldly proclaimed that Christ is LORD over all (Colossians 1:15-20).

Now, there have been many brave men and women who have spoken on the topics of sexual immorality, Critical Race Theory, and the other ideas that are poisoning the Western world — many such people are on this very platform. But this woman, whose name I am ashamed to say I have forgotten, said one thing in particular that has stuck with me all this time.

She spoke openly about how the Left uses slander as a weapon of warfare — shouldn't we expect this from the father of lies? — and posed the question, what are we, as lovers of Truth, to do about this? Should we hurl insults back? Sit quietly in the corner so as not to invoke more aggression? Tell them they are being mean? No. We have a higher calling.

The wise Antiguan woman put it this way, "Let them say what they'd like, but let them always be wrong."

Wow.

Those wise words taught me something very important. I cannot expect light from a person in darkness, and I cannot expect Truth from a person who only knows lies. I should not be surprised when this fallen world and those still under the domain of the devil hate the Truth and seek to slander and discredit those who share it. It is not my job to control or try to tame their tongue, but it is my job to control my own.

  • If the Left calls you a racist, let them be wrong.
  • If the Left calls you a sexist, let them be wrong.
  • If the Left calls you hateful, let them be wrong.

Whatever insult may be thrown your way, let it be wrong.

This call to be pure and blameless before the world and the LORD is echoed throughout scripture. Here are just a few examples:

  • "Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain." — Philippians 2:14-16
  • "Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!" — Psalm 119:1
  • "I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge — even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you — so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord." — 1 Corinthians 1:4-9
  • "Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." — 1 Thessalonians 5:23

I think of it this way, when you one day stand before the Lord of lords and King of kings to give an account of your life, will you say "I told off a lot of Lefties who called me mean names," or will you say, "I fought the good fight holding fast to the Word of Truth — I hope I pierced a heart or two."

When we become disinterested in our own name and are eternally concerned with bringing glory to His, we will be blameless before the world and before our LORD. Then we can confidently say, "They said what they'd liked, but they were always wrong."

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak." — Ephesians 6:10-20
