Who Was Lot In The Bible? A Biblical Study On the Life and Death Of Lot

  1. There are several negative narratives about the character of Lot, the nephew of Abraham.
  2. The most popular commentary is that Lot was a liability to Abraham, and Abraham could not prosper until he separated himself from Lot.
  3. Genesis 19, however, revealed several positive attributes of Lot that are seldom discussed.

Qualities of Lot

  1. He had a discerning spirit. He recognised Angels when they approached him in human form – vs 1.
  2. He was respectful and courteous. He bowed down to strangers – vs 1.
  3. He was humble. He called strangers’ my Lord’ – vs 2.
  4. He was a good Samaritan and accommodating. He was willing to offer accommodation to strangers and cared for them. – vs. 2.
  5. He was caring. He feasted the two strangers – vs 3.
  6. Though Sodom and Gomorrah were full of homosexuals, Lot was not corrupted – vs 4.
  7. He secured his guests from the physical attacks by the Sodomites – vs 6
  8. He was a responsible host who was not willing to hand over his guests to the enemies – vs 7
  9. He feared God. He preached to the Sodomites and advised them to avoid wickedness. He was an evangelist – vs 7.
  10. He was a model Christian father who trained his children in righteousness. His daughters were virgins – vs 8.
  11. He was sacrificial. He offered his two daughters as a ransom for the life of the strangers – vs 8.
  12. He resisted the men of Sodom and stopped them from forcing their way inside his house – vs 9.
  13. His righteousness saved his daughters – vs 16.
  14. He obeyed God’s word and never looked back as he fled Sodom. However, his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt – vs 15, 26.
  15. He was an intercessor, and he pleaded with the Angels to be allowed to travel afar before Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed – vs 17.
  16. HE received grace and mercy from God – vs 19.
  17. God saved him from being consumed in the iniquity of Sodom and Gomorrah – vs 15.
  18. He benefitted from God’s covenant of preservation of Abraham’s lineage – vs 29.
