The Eternal Golden Lampstand

John, the author of Revelation, was “in spirit on the Lord’s Day” (a Sunday, first day of the week, the day of His resurrection – Mark 16:2, 9). He heard a voice and “I turned to see the voice that spoke with me; and when I turned, I saw seven golden lampstands” (Rev. 1:12).

New JerusalemHe also saw “in the midst of the lampstands One like the Son of Man” (1:13) caring for the lampstands. In 1:20 the Lord told John that “the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”

In Revelation 4 John was again “in spirit” and was caught away to the throne in heaven (v. 1-2). There he saw “seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God” (v. 5). Seven Spirits in Revelation indicates the one Spirit intensified sevenfold.

The churches are the lampstands and they uphold the burning, shining Spirit as the lamp. The churches are necessary but they are not the source of the shining.

Eventually the seven churches, representing all the churches, become the unique city, New Jerusalem. Both the lampstands (1:12) and New Jerusalem (21:18) are golden.  This city is the eternal lampstand upholding the glorious God shining in Christ the Lamb as the Lamp.

Revelation 21:23: New Jerusalem “has no need of the sun or of the moon that they should shine in it, for the glory of God illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
