The King of Righteousness and Peace
The name New Jerusalem means foundation of peace. Peace is an issue of righteousness. Isaiah 32:17 declares “the work of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.” Today there is no peace because fallen men, corporations, and nations are unrighteously competing, seeking to gain more power, influence, fame, or wealth.
Second Peter 3:13 tells us “according to His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” New Jerusalem will come out of heaven onto the new earth (Rev. 21:1-2) to be the foundation of peace in a realm of righteous.
Hebrews 7 begins with Melchizedek, king of Salem, who was revealed in Genesis 14. Verse 2 tells us that his name is “first being interpreted king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.” This Melchizedek, “likened to the Son of God,” (v. 3) is a figure of Christ who is the eternal King of righteousness and peace.
Jesus Christ is the only way to have complete peace on the earth. When He reigns as King over all mankind there will be righteousness and peace. Apart Him any human action attempting to make peace somewhere will be outdone by unrighteousness elsewhere. Let us not give much attention to the temporal things which are seen but rather to the eternal, unseen things (2 Cor. 4:18) of the new creation and New Jerusalem.
