The Names Of God - Yahweh Or Jehovah - Part 2 - Pursuing Intimacy With God

The Names of God – Yahweh or Jehovah – Part 2

In Part 1 we began to look at one of the names of God – Yahweh or Jehovah. The name Yahweh has very important meanings. We looked at how the name Yahweh (Jehovah in English) revealed some of God’s character and glory.

The first 3 characteristics of God revealed by the name of God Yahweh include that God is Self Existent and Eternal. And that God is the God With Authority over all in the heavens and earth. And that God is The Redeemer of His people.

Now we will look at 3 more characteristics of God that the name of God Yahweh reveals.

The Names Of God – Yahweh or Jehovah

The Name of God – Yahweh – Reveals That God Is The God Who Always Keeps His Promises

God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation in Genesis 12. He also promised him that His descendants would be given the Promised Land, after they are redeemed from Egypt.

In Genesis 15 God makes the promise to Abraham about His people Israel being redeemed from Egypt and receiving the Promised Land. “God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. 14 But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions. 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. 16 Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”

Approximately 635 years after God promised to Abraham to redeem His people from Egypt, the exodus began. And God eventually gave His people the Promised Land. God is the Redeemer (YHWH) and the God Who Always Keeps His Promise (YHWH).

The Names of God – Yahweh – Reveals that God is the Unchanging God

Another aspect of God’s name and character is that He is unchanging. God was the same in the past as He is now in the present. And He will be the same in the future too. His love is a never ending love and will always be the same. God is always merciful and always will be. He is always compassionate and slow to anger, and He always will be.

Exodus 34:5-8 “The LORD (YHWH) descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the LORD. 6 Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; 7 who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” 8 Moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship.”

Malachi 3:6 “For I, the LORD, do not change. Therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”

Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

The Names Of God

Yahweh – Reveals that God is the Relationship Oriented God

When God revealed His name Yahweh to Moses and the people of Israel, it was because He wanted a special relationship with them. Yahweh would be their God, and they would be His special people.

Some Bible verses call Israel God’s treasured possession, such as Deuteronomy 7:6. “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.”

Exodus 25:8-9 “Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them, 9 according to all that I am going to show you, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct it.”

God desires a restored personal relationship (1 Timothy 2:4), and then close fellowship with all people. He wants this so much that He sent His only Son Jesus (John 3:16) to suffer terribly and die a horrible death to make this possible. God proved His great love for us when He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and redemption (Romans 5:8).

1 Corinthians 1:9 ” God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (“koinania” fellowship with God through Jesus is the closest possible fellowship, and oneness with God, and a partnership in His kingdom work and mission)

2 Corinthians 6:18 “And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the LORD Almighty.”

May God bless you to know Him more and more in real and personal ways.
