The Number One Reason People Blow Off the Bible

So which is it?

• Some people pick up a Bible, read, it, and see it for what it is: God’s Word. The revelation of Himself to us.
• Other people read the same Bible and blow it off.

So which group is right? I don’t accept the notion that truth is whatever you choose truth to be. That may be true for you, but it’s not for me. Either the Bible is from God— or it’s not.

Here’s why some people dismiss the Bible.

God wants all people to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Tim. 2:4), but He won’t force it on us. God does not revel in hidden knowledge; we don’t have to work hard to unravel the mystery.

Yet at the same time, we do need to be in tune with how He speaks.

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit” (1 Cor. 2:14).

God’s Word is not hidden, but we must be willing to seek Him. God, if this is Your Word, show me. His Spirit reveals His Word.

All truth is God’s truth, and those who earnestly desire to know the truth will find it. The apostle Paul wrote about those who “refuse to love the truth” (2 Thess. 2:10). That’s an interesting phrase in our current climate of fake news; people choosing what they want to believe as the truth. But Paul said something harsh about these people:

“God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness” (vv. 11-12).

When we chase after wickedness—preferring it and delighting in it—we are in no position to see truth for what it is. God sends a delusion we embrace because we’ve chosen not to embrace His truth.

I’ll admit: that’s a tough statement. God doesn’t cause us to be deceived, but He will let us fall for the delusion because we’ve already embraced those things that are the opposite of His truth.

People’s rejection of God’s Word has nothing to do with any supposed errors or inconsistencies. It has nothing to do with doubting the trustworthiness of the Bible. People will wave those flags, but the underlying reason behind it all is a love for their own self-centered—wicked—lives. They don’t really want to know the truth; they just want to embrace as “truth” whatever will fit their own way of thinking and living.

If the Bible is not God’s Word, I’ve wasted my entire life. And my death will be come to nothing.

But if the Bible is from God, it merits more than just a casual reading. It merits my full attention.
