The Power of God

Paul, while in prison, wrote a letter to the church at Ephesus that is still changing lives today.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” – Ephesians 3:20&21

Let’s linger for a minute on five of the most phenomenal words the Holy Spirit has ever written … far, more abundantly beyond all.

Paul was unable to think of a word that could be used to describe the power of God, so he created a word never used before. The word that Paul and the Holy Spirit collaborated on is “hyperekperissou”. This word can be translated as “superabundantly, beyond measure, exceedingly and far more than.”

Paul, the brilliant scholar and writer employed this brand-new piece of verbiage not once but three times back-to-back in rapid succession. And then, just for good measure, this academician and wordsmith, added one smaller word just for some extra punch. The word that he uses as a grand exclamation point is “hyper” which means “over, beyond, more than.”

The absolute delight of this verse is that Paul is not exaggerating one little bit! All you have prayed for and all you have longed for is possible because of Him whose power is not limited by circumstances, people, or time. All that you have ever asked for and dreamed about is probable because the God you serve is great enough to pull it off! God can accomplish far more than you could ever ask for or imagine.

Paul’s God is your God! The same power that was at Paul’s disposal 2,000 years ago is yours today.

God has called you to live a life so unrivaled that you will undoubtedly need His power to fulfill your earthly purposes. There is no such thing as an “impossible dream” because you serve a God to whom nothing is impossible. You honor God when you dream colossal dreams and when you pray unrealistic prayers. God never thinks that a child of His is being presumptive in prayer. The sad truth is that most of us are guilty of asking for far too little. Whatever we ask, think or imagine – we serve a God who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly more.

“Dunamis” is the word for power that Paul used in the letter to the Ephesians.

It was “dunamis” power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead - and that same power is working within you.

It was “dunamis” power that was given to the disciples at Pentecost - and that same power is working within you.

It is “dunamis” power that makes you strong when you are weak.

“Dunamis” power is always working and is ever energetic. “Dunamis” power never takes a nap and is never on vacation. Your life was always meant to be the grand demonstration of the “dunamis” power of God.

Scripture Verse: Ephesians 3:20 & 21

Reflection Points:

1 – What is the most incredible answer to prayer you have ever experienced?

2 – What do you need God’s power for today?

3 – Why is it significant that Paul wrote these verses from a prison cell?

Prayer:

“Jesus, I thank You for Your power today. I thank You that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in me. I thank You that the same power that was given on the day of Pentecost dwells in me. I thank You that Your power makes me strong when I am weak. Lord, let me life be a stirring example of the dunamis power of God. When people see me, let them be amazed at what Your power is doing. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
