but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me (Romans 7:23).
Here the apostle Paul mentions two laws which work in him: the law of his mind and the law of sin. In the previous verse Paul observed how in his inner being he delighted in God’s law. This is what he means by “the law of his mind.” This is the way that he knows he should live.
Paul acknowledges that in this life, he is a “prisoner” of the law of sin that works within him. This law which binds him is manifested in the fact that his body is subject to death.
The body sickens and ages and eventually dies. More fundamentally, it is subject to eternal death as the penalty for sin.
Paul acknowledges that in this life, he is a “prisoner” of the law of sin that works within him.
Paul describes the inner life of the follower of Christ as a war between the law of his mind and the law of sin. The law of his mind is the delight in his inner being in the law of God.
There are many Christians who believe that they are engaged in a war against the things outside of them: against other sinful people, against ideas and practices they consider to be wrong, and even against other believers. However, Paul reminds us that our truest war is not external but internal. Our conflict is against ourselves.
