Unlimited: The Parable of the Mustard Seed

Again, he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade” (Mark 4:30-32, NIV).

Jesus taught using a series of parables from the world of farming: a world his listeners knew well.

He uses the mustard seed as a symbol of the kingdom of God. Again, the sower is Jesus himself. In this story, he is sowing something that seems small and insignificant: mustard seeds. The mustard seed was one of the smallest seeds known to people back then.

Even though the mustard seed is tiny, when it grows, it becomes a tall shrub that provides shelter for the birds.

It’s easy to ignore the teachings of Jesus. We all get busy, and the pressures of life easily take over our attention. They seem so big that by comparison spiritual things can seem very small.

If you ignore Jesus’ teachings, you won’t be able to have that wonderful shelter for your life that you’ll find in the Kingdom of God. Seek him today!
