Walk with Me

And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. — Genesis 5:22-24 (NIV)
My husband and I walk together several mornings a week. Along the way, we share our plans for the day. Sometimes we describe a weird dream from the night before or discuss a situation needing to be resolved. We chat about family and the latest funny thing a grandchild did or said. The walks provide connection to each other. The connection may run deep; it may be routine, but these walks are part of the glue that keeps us close.
When I first read today’s verse, I envied Enoch’s closeness to God. When his time arrived to leave his life on earth, God came to him and took him to heaven. The moment is described as “then he was no more”. How did Enoch receive such an amazing gift? The answer is found in verse 22. “Enoch walked with God for 300 years.”
Enoch didn’t walk with God for a few minutes, then put Him on a shelf and went about his day. He didn’t call on God only in the hard times. His entire life was a continuous walk with God. He and God shared a deep rapport. They communicated constantly. Enoch opened his heart to listen and submit to God.
In Hebrews, we learn Enoch’s faith was why he didn’t experience death. (Hebrews 11:5) During his life he was known as one who pleased God.
How do we have a similar walk with God? We live with God. We don’t restrict Him to a short devotion or prayer. Our entire day belongs to Him. We talk with Him, we praise Him while completing routine tasks, we pause to share our fears, hopes, and joys with Him. In everything we do, say, or think, we ask God to be present.
My husband and I don’t have one conversation in the morning and never speak the rest of the day. We talk throughout the day. How much more valuable is our relationship with God? Instead of focusing on trying to be perfect for God, let’s strive to be present with God.

Questions for Reflection:
1. What prevents you from sharing your entire day, and night, with God?
2. What is one way you can walk closer with God today?
