Will You Fully Follow & Obey Jesus Part 2 - Pursuing Intimacy With God

Will You Fully Follow & Obey Jesus ?

In Part 1 of this series on Will You Fully Follow & Obey Jesus ? we looked at one very important area that most Christians are not obey Jesus in. It concerns Jesus’ love and passion to have a restored personal relationship with all people. He wants this so much that He was willing to leave heaven and suffer greatly and die a horrible death on the cross. All to make it possible for us and others to have a restored relationship with Him and eternal life with Him in heaven.

Jesus’ command in Matthew 4:19 says “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men”. After Jesus died on the cross and rose up to heaven, who would continue His mission of sharing the Gospel and reaching lost people ? Lost people that God dearly loves. This command is all about us, the church, continuing the Kingdom work and mission of sharing the Good News of Jesus with as many others as we possible can. We will continue to look at this key area where many Christians are not obeying.

We will also look at another area that is very important to God. He is passionate about this also. And it is another area that most Christians are not fully following & obeying Jesus.

Will You Fully Follow & Obey Jesus ?

Is Jesus’ Command For All or Only For Pastors & Missionaries ?

In Matthew 4:19 was Jesus talking only to the disciples that would later become the leaders of the church (the apostles) ? Or was He giving a command to all of His followers ?

Jesus was speaking to all of His followers. he was speaking to all Christians,  when He said “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”. He was not talking to just a certain few in the church. Jesus was talking to all of us. Yet only a very small group of church members are truly obeying and following Jesus’ command to actively share the Good News with others.

Another way to say what Jesus was saying in Matthew 4:19 is this: “If you are not being a “fisher of men”, someone who actively shares Christ with others, then you are not truly following Me”. To truly follow Jesus means to do all that He says or commands, not just the things we think we can do, or feel comfortable to do.

The Early Church In Acts – Our Example to Follow

The early church in Acts is the example we need to follow. In the early church in Acts all members actively shared Christ with others. Because they were passionate about their personal relationship with the Lord. And they fully understood the command that Jesus gave in Matthew 4:19. They understood that Jesus was talking to all of His followers.

“And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.” – Acts 8:1

“Those who had been scattered (all regular members of the church except the apostles) preached the Word (the Gospel of Jesus Christ) wherever they went.” – Acts 8:4

They faithfully shared the Lord’s love and passion to have a restored personal relationship with all people of the world.

Another Key Area Most Christians Are Not Following & Obeying Jesus In

There is another thing that God is very passionate about. God is very passionate about having close fellowship with His children. And for them to become more and more like Jesus. In other words, God wants His children to be faithful disciples of Jesus. Faithful disciples that fully follow & obey Jesus. And faithful disciples that are growing closer to Jesus and more like Him.

There is another command of Jesus that involves these things that are very important to God.  Jesus’ command to go and make disciples in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

We Are All to Be Involved In Making Disciples

Jesus wants all of His followers to be involved in helping other believers to know Him personally and to become more like Him. We are all to invest our time and talents and resources in God’s passion to make faithful disciples.

Even if you are not a Bible teacher or a pastor, you can encourage and help people to know Jesus. And to grow closer to Him and be more like Him. Jesus’ commands are for all of us to be involved in reaching the lost. And then helping them to be faithful disciples once they have a restored relationship with Jesus.

May God touch our hearts and give us His love and passion for others who do not know the joy and peace of having a personal relationship with God through Jesus. And may God touch our hearts and show us how we can all be involved in helping others to grow closer to Jesus and more like Him.
