Worship Therapy: Choose to Thrive - Dr. Dalton-Smith - I Choose My Best Life

Welcome to Worship Therapy!

Worship has been an important part of my healing journey.  On this weekly podcast,  I’ll be sharing songs and artists who have impacted my life with their gifts.

This week we will be discussing how thriving is a choice. You do not have to live in a cycle of endless striving and stress.

WORSHIP

Our featured song is Thrive by Casting Crowns.

Lyrics:

Here in this worn and weary land
Where many a dream has died
Like a tree planted by the water
We never will run dry
So living water flowing through
God, we thirst for more of You
Fill our hearts and flood our souls

with one desire
Just to know You and to make You known
We lift Your name on high
Shine like the sun,
make darkness run and hide
We know we were made for so

much more than ordinary lives
Its time for us to more than just survive
We were made to thrive
Into Your word, we’re digging deep
To know our Father’s heart
Into the world, we’re reaching out
To show them who You are

So living water flowing through
God, we thirst for more of You
Fill our hearts and flood our souls
with one desire
Just to know You and to make You known
We lift Your name on high

Shine like the sun,
make darkness run and hide
We know we were made
for so much more than ordinary lives

WORD OF GOD

Read Psalm 1

This Psalm opens with a wonderful image of what your life can look like:

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers. ~ Psalm 1:1-3

Now consider the words of the song Thive. If your life feels dry and weary, it’s a sign you are thirsting for the Living Water only God can provide.

Today’s Therapy Session

  1. Are you thrive mode or survival mode? One lesson we can learn from the imagery in Psalm 1 is our need to stay connected to the stream. Survival mode is when you wait until the last minute to take a drink. Thrive mode is when you drink often and intentionally. Today’s a great day to purposely make time for self-care.
  2.  Do you believe you were made for more than to just survive? If you find yourself saying no, bring into question those self-limiting beliefs which cause you to feel this way. Just because struggle has been part of your past experience does not mean it is supposed to be your ongoing companion.
