Genesis 28 vs. 20-22

20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:

22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

  1. For divine presence … “If God will be with me”
  2. For divine protection … “And will keep me in His way”
  3. For divine provision … “And will give me bread to eat”
  4. For divine governing … “And raiment to put on”
  5. For divine peace… “So that I come again to my father’s house in peace.
  6. To test God … “Then shall the Lord be my God”
  7. To confirm Lord’s presence in His church … “And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house”
  8. To recognise God as the giver of wealth of wealth … “And of all that thou shalt give me”
  9. To honour God … “I will surely give the tenth of them”
  10. To prove your obedience … “And Jacob vowed a vow”

I hugged my pink stuffed poodle to my chest. We were about to have a serious conversation, even though I would be the only one talking. My ten-year-old self looked into his black button eyes and confided the empty ache that I dare not admit to anyone. I didn’t say the words out loud. I didn’t need to. We were close like that.
