I should rather say, purify your intentions and motives, on a daily. In our walk with God, sometimes we unintentionally ask for things and experiences with God for the wrong motives and intentions. I believe that is as a result of this human body which houses our Spirit, as we already know that the flesh is prone to sin.

Why do you want the things you crave for?
Why do you need the HolySpirit?
Why do you want you want to be top in your field?

You might be asking for a beautiful experience with God and your mind is already straying, your mind is choosing a public place where that would happen, with the β€˜right’ people in place to watch that happen to you. They’ll be shocked to realize you’re that personal with God. Ha!

You might be asking for funds to put your career and business in place and your mind is giving you ideas of people you’ll β€˜pepper’ with the beautiful outfits you’ll start wearing.

You might be asking for the ministry of healing and you’re wondering about the number of social platforms it would be posted on.

Paul Cho said in one of his books that one of the prerequisites for the Holy Spirit is not asking with the wrong motives. Every other thing we do here on earth as Christians isn’t really for us but for God’s Glory to be seen. When we bring God to the spotlight, he carries us with Him. I wrote a post about how God brings us to the light when we choose to show forth his Glory.

Yours might not be any of these I listed here, it might be different, just know that your intentions aren’t pure if you’re trying to take the Glory away from God and let yourself be seen instead.

I also know that the moment we realize how far and wide our minds has strayed, most times, even in the place of prayer, we can catch ourselves and slowly retrace our steps.
Most of us feel guilty about it that sometimes we can’t even continue with prayer, or we go for days avoiding God because of what we’ve thought about.

The fact that you realized when you were straying and came back to line, is enough proof that it isn’t you. As a Christian you have two natures now, the new nature is the new man in Christ, and while the old nature still wants to sin.
Don’t forget that both natures are alive.

Don’t wallow in guilt anymore and stay away from God when this happens, instead :
1. See those thoughts as sin, confess and repent of them.

2. Receive God’s forgiveness and shake off guilt (you’ll understand that guilt is one of the methods the devil uses in keeping us away from God. The Holy Spirit convicts us, but the devil only brings guilt.

3. Ask God to purify your thoughts, intentions and motives.
Ps.19.14 – Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my [firm, impenetrable] Rock and my Redeemer.

4. Normalize rejecting and casting down thoughts and imaginations, and bringing them under Christ.
2Cor.10.5 – Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

5. Give yourself a new and balanced reason why you’re here and why you do the things you do. Sum it up in : For God’s Glory. You were created for God’s Glory, any motive outside that isn’t aligned with the general purpose for our Creation.
Isa.43.7 – Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
Rev.4.11 – Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive the glory and the honor and dominion, for You created all things; by Your will they were [brought into being] and were created.
