A King Like No Other - Carla D Burnette

With Christmas drawing near, let’s continue to pause and prepare our hearts by reflecting on Jesus. In my previous post (The King Born for Us), we discussed why Jesus was born for us. We learned that He came to give us life, to deliver us from sin and to establish God’s kingdom. Now let’s focus on the names given to Jesus, which reveal His character and relate to the kingdom He will establish. These names prove He is a king like no other.

Isaiah 9:6 proclaims, “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (CSB).

Wonderful Counselor

What do you think of when you hear the word “counselor”? Perhaps, a person who gives advice or wisdom. Another definition in the original Hebrew language is “to decide, to make plans, or decisions”. Both descriptions apply to Jesus. The latter definition pertains to Jesus’ rule and reign as King.

Not only is Jesus a counselor, but He is the “Wonderful Counselor”. The Bible defines wonderful as “marked by a marvelous, amazing or extraordinary quality”.

While on earth, Jesus demonstrated exceptional wisdom when teaching and responding to questions (Luke 4:32; 20:25-26). Remember the Pharisees who tried to trick Jesus? Even they were amazed at His answers and were unable to counter in reply. Instead, they remained silent.

Before Jesus returned to heaven, He told His disciples that He would ask the Father for “another” Counselor to be with them (John 14:16). This Counselor, known as the Holy Spirit, would teach them all things and remind them of all truth (John 14:26).

In the same way, the Holy Spirit serves as our counselor today. Turn to Him for guidance, wisdom and truth.

Mighty God

Speaking of Jesus, Isaiah also prophesied, ‘“the virgin [Mary] will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is translated ‘God is with us’”’ (Matthew 1:23).

Jesus demonstrated supernatural power when He healed the sick (Mark 1:41), raised the dead (Luke 7:13) and performed miracles, such as turning water into wine and feeding the multitudes (Matthew 14:14; 15:32). He is the all-powerful, Mighty God

Are you in need of a miracle? Ask the Lord God Almighty. Nothing is impossible for Him.

Eternal Father

The next name given to Jesus is “Eternal Father”. According to the New Bible Commentary, “Father signifies the paternal benevolence of the perfect Ruler over a people whom he loves as his children”.

Jesus exemplified a father’s love by showing compassion for people (Matthew 9:36, Mark 11:51), welcoming children to come to Him (Matthew 19:14) and watching over His disciples (John 17:12). Similarly, He watches over us and intercedes for us today (Romans 8:34).

Jesus is the Eternal Father. His kingdom will never end (Isaiah 9:7; Rev. 11:15).

Prince of Peace

Lastly, Jesus is called the “Prince of Peace”. Strong’s Concordance defines prince as a “ruler, chief, commander, leader”. From this definition, we see that Jesus is a ruler or commander of peace. His kingdom will be characterized by peace, justice and righteousness (Isaiah 9:7; 26:12a)

In John 14:27, Jesus tells His disciples, ‘“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful”’ (CSB).

Jesus, Himself, is our peace. Go to Jesus with your cares, worries and fears. Cast them onto Him and allow the peace of Christ to rule in your heart rather than fear and worry (Colossians 3:15; Psalm 55:22).

The Perfect King

Overall, these four titles clearly reveal Jesus as the perfect King. May we bow down in humble adoration before the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace. He is unrivaled in power and matchless in wisdom. He is our loving Father in whom we have complete peace. Truly, He is a king like no other.

While celebrating Jesus’ birth this Christmas season, let’s also remember that Jesus Christ sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven and will one day return as King of kings and Lord of lords. What joyous hope we have as we await His glorious return.

Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to rescue us. He is the perfect King and is everything to us. May Your Spirit remind us of these truths as we wait in joyful expectation of His soon coming return. We give You all the glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
