THE ACTION
The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
Genesis 3:8-13 NLT
THE REACTION
When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”
“Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”
Observation (s):
- From the beginning of time, man demonstrated an ability to take the easy way out and refrain from taking responsibility for his actions, choosing to cast the blame for negative results elsewhere, when possible. It quite interesting to realize that woman made a decision to act based on the arguments presented to her by the serpent and her own desires for wisdom. She then consciously proceeded to involve her husband. However, when the results are brought to fruition and man is required to take responsibility for his actions that led to the results, he chooses to foist the blame unto the woman. The woman in turn blames the serpent.
The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”
- Before the incident in which the forbidden fruit is eaten, man and God seemed to have an easy relationship. God came to visit the garden each evening and man and He communed (walking and talking.) Sin and the guilt of disobedience bared man and caused him to hide from God. God’s response is somewhat curious. The all-knowing and all-seeing God gives man a chance to step from behind the separation that sin has caused and acknowledge his wrong.
Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
AND
“Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”
Application:
God wants me to commune with Him daily. He is always open and waiting to see me step from the shadows that sin has engulfed me in and hear me acknowledge my wrongs. I must be willing to step into the light and accept responsibility for the consequences of my actions. If I am unable to accept responsibility, don’t do the act. Casting the blame will only worsen the situation.
