Standout Verse(s):

THE ACTION

2 Chronicles 20:35-36 NLT

Some time later King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, who was very wicked. Together they built a fleet of trading ships at the port of Ezion-geber.

THE REACTION

2 Chronicles 20:37 NLT

Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat. He said, “Because you have allied yourself with King Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy your work.” So the ships met with disaster and never put out to sea.

Observation (s):

  1. King Jehoshaphat made an alliance with King Ahaziah, a man the Lord deemed as wicked.

    Some time later King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, who was very wicked.

  2. Together, they built a fleet of ships that would have been a great blessing to Israel.

    Together they built a fleet of trading ships at the port of Ezion-geber.

  3. Because of the unholy alliance, God destroyed King Jehoshaphat’s work. The ships’ potential was extinguished.

    He said, “Because you have allied yourself with King Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy your work.” So the ships met with disaster and never put out to sea.

Application:

The Bible describes King Ahaziah of Israel as wicked. Yet, King Jehoshaphat of Judah a God-fearing man chose to enter into an alliance with him. Together they invested into an endeavor that would have made Israel richer. They built a fleet of trading ships. However, the alliance was not approved or ordained by God! Therefore, God turned what had the potential to be a great blessing into a disaster. The ships, with so much promise, never left the harbor. The Lord destroyed King Jehoshaphat’s work because of the wicked person he chose to ally with in order to achieve his work.

Do a personal audit. Are the persons you are allying with approved by God? Your unordained alliances can block or revoke your blessings. Choose your alliances wisely!
