Figs and Almonds: Healing Foods in the Bible

Throughout the Bible, food is often presented as more than something to satisfy hunger. Many foods are connected to strength, healing, and restoration. One of the most meaningful examples is the fig.
Figs appear often in Scripture as a symbol of peace, blessing, and abundance. But their importance was not only symbolic. In ancient times, figs were an important source of nutrition and were sometimes even used in practical ways to help people recover from illness.
One of the clearest examples appears in 2 Kings 20. King Hezekiah became seriously ill with a painful boil and was close to death. At that moment, the prophet Isaiah gave a very simple instruction:
“Prepare a poultice of figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover.” (2 Kings 20:7)
This moment is fascinating because God healed Hezekiah, yet He also chose to work through something practical and ordinary. Healing came through faith, prayer, and a simple natural remedy. It is a reminder that God often works through the good things He has already placed in creation.
Today, we know that figs are rich in fiber and minerals. They contain high amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium, and B vitamins, which may help support energy levels, digestion, and overall wellness.
Figs also contain an enzyme called ficin, which is believed to help break down protein and may play a role in tissue repair. That may help explain why people in the ancient world saw figs as more than just fruit. They were viewed as food that could strengthen and restore the body.
Almonds make an excellent companion to figs because they add protein, healthy fat, and lasting energy. Almonds also appear many times in the Bible. The lampstand in the tabernacle was decorated with almond blossoms, and Aaron’s staff miraculously budded, bloomed, and produced almonds.
“The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.” (Numbers 17:8)
In Scripture, almonds often point to life, renewal, and God’s choice. From a nutritional standpoint, they are also packed with benefits. Almonds contain vitamin E, healthy fats, protein, and magnesium, which may support heart health, blood sugar balance, and protection for the body’s cells.
Figs provide quick energy, while almonds provide staying power and healthy fat. Together, they make a simple but balanced snack that can help support the body naturally.
Today, many people search for expensive supplements, trendy diets, or complicated health plans. Yet some of the best foods for our bodies may be the ones God has already given us through His creation.
Sometimes what we need most is not something more complicated, but a return to simple, wholesome foods that nourish both body and soul.
