Bible study: Qualities of Ruth

1. Ruth was a Moabite. The Moabites were descendants of strange relationships and did not have a good story line in the Bible. Moabites and Ammonites are Lot’s sons, born of incest with his daughters (Genesis 19:37–38). But Ruth was different from his people. Stand out from the crowd and the rewrite the negative history of your father’s house vs. 4 ‘…and they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years…’
2. Ruth became a widow at an early age. But she did not allow herself to become depressed. She summoned courage and rose above her affliction. . vs. 5. ‘…And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband…’

1. Ruth had good relationship with her mother in law. Verse 14, ‘…and they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her…’ She was a loving daughter in law. She was a model daughter in law. These days, she would have accused her mother in law of witchcraft of killing her husband. If she was not of good character, her mother in law would not have loved her.
2. Ruth believed in marriage and its sanctity. She loved her husband even at death. Vs. 16, ‘And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God…’ She knows marriage is for better for good. She was not ready to walk out of her marriage for a simple or strong excuse
3. Ruth was a believer. Her sister in law went back to her gods vs. 15, ‘…and she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law…’ but she cleaved to the God of Naomi See vs. 16. Ruth refused to be polluted by the idolatrous background of her people.
4. Ruth had a strong mind, focused and steadfast. Vs. 18, ‘…When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her…’She refused to be convinced to part with her mother in law once she took what, she believed to be a good decision
5. Ruth was divinely connected. Chapter 2 vs. 1, ‘… And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz…’ She met Boaz a wealthy kinsman on her return to Bethlehem, her late husband’s country.

1. Ruth was diligent and hard worker. She refused to be idle or mourn her window hood but looked for work immediately she returned to her husband’s country. Ruth 2 vs. 2, ‘…And Ruth the Moabites said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.

• I cast out the spirit of idleness spirit in Jesus name

1. Ruth was a woman of prayers. See 2 vs 2. She prayed for grace as she went to work and found grace.
2. Ruth was a workaholic. She worked from morning till evening without idling that even her master noticed her. Ruth 2 vs 7, ‘…And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house…’
3. 1 Ruth was attractive, a good dresser, and beautiful. Even her master noticed her and asked, whose damsel is this? Ruth 2 vs 5, ‘…Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, whose damsel is this? 6. And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab…’ If she had been wearing mourning clothes because of her situation, widowhood or poverty maybe her master would not have noticed her and favoured her.

• Holy Spirit give me a dress sense

1. Ruth found favour and grace in the eyes of her master and he protected her from being molested, harassed or even raped by the young men who would have noticed her beauty. Ruth 2 vs 9 to 10 and verse 15

• I receive favour, and grace in Jesus name

1. Ruth endured and Boaz favoured and rewarded her because of her endurance and faithfulness. Ruth 2 vs 11, ‘…. And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore…’
2. Ruth was obedient to her boss and her mother in law. She stayed with the young maidens and refused to walkabout around town and could have been possibly polluted or suffered the fate of Dinah (Jacob’s daughter) who was raped by young men when she was visiting friends Vs 22, ‘… And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter that thou go out with his maidens that they meet thee not in any other field…’

• Rebellious spirit in me, be cast out in Jesus name

1. 15. Ruth was not greedy for money and followed the instructions of her mum in picking her new marriage partner. Ruth 3 vs 11, ‘… And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman…’ These days young people do not listen to elderly counsel and advise in choosing marriage partner…once they are blinded by love.

• Razor of God, cut my long throat in Jesus name

1. Ruth was a virtuous woman. Even her boss called her such. Vs 11.

• I receive the virtue of Ruth in Jesus name

1. Ruth found favour in her master’s eyes. He refused to take advantage of her even when she came to lie at his feet and requested him to cover his shirt over her at midnight till morning. Ruth 3 vs 9 and 14

• I receive divine favour in the order of Ruth in Jesus name

1. God eventually blessed Ruth, He blessed her womb and her offspring. She was rewarded for loyalty, faithfulness, hard work, endurance, strength, character, godliness, purity and focus. Ruth gave birth to Obed the grandfather of David and ancestor of Jesus. Ruth 4 vs 13 & 17.

• God of Ruth turn my shame to glory in Jesus name

1. The days of affliction of Ruth was forgotten as she rewrote her history from that of a window to a virtuous woman.
2. May God give us daughters and servants with the character of Ruth, mother in laws heart of Naomi, and bosses with the kindness and grace of Boaz in Jesus name.
