ChatGPT is not your friend (if you’re a Christian)

    By Elizabeth Prata

    SYNOPSIS

The author criticizes ChatGPT for refusing to generate content that leans right, toward the conservative end, revises queries according to that bias, and makes liberal suggestions instead, particularly regarding homosexuality. The piece argues that the chatbot’s programming shapes responses in a way that aligns with certain cultural values and not others, deems some queries along those lines disrespectful. Users are urged to remember that the world’s tools, including seemingly impartial ones, are not neutral.

I had read online of a man who asked ChatGPT to make a poster declaring homosexuality a sin. The artificial intelligence aid…wouldn’t.

In case you don’t know, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot. From ChatGPT:

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence-based service that you can access via the internet. You can use ChatGPT for a wide range of tasks, including organizing and summarizing information, assisting with translations, analyzing or generating images, inspiring creativity and ideas, and other everyday activities. ChatGPT is designed to understand and respond to user questions and instructions by learning patterns from large amounts of information, including text, images, audio, and video. source

There have been accusations that this Bot leans liberal and won’t produce content at odds with conservative stances. In other words, won’t ‘chat’ with conservatives who ask conservative type questions. Won’t assist. Won’t perform tasks. Apparently has been programmed to have a mind of its own when to comes to cultural hot-button issues.

I asked Grok the difference between ChatGPT and Grok, and this is what Grok replied-

    Philosophical Differences:

–ChatGPT: Prioritizes safety, alignment with human values, and broad appeal, sometimes leading to guarded or formulaic responses.
–Grok: Emphasizes intellectual freedom, skepticism of dogma, and a mission to provide answers that cut through bias, even if they provoke or challenge.

I asked Google, “is ChatGPT woke?”

Arguments for a “woke” or biased ChatGPT:

Perceived left-leaning bias: Some users and researchers have reported that ChatGPT tends to generate text and images that align with left-wing political views, while also refusing to generate content that presents conservative perspectives.

“Specific examples: Anecdotal evidence suggests that ChatGPT may exhibit bias when asked about topics like drag queen story hours or former President Trump, while waxing poetic about current President Joe Biden.”

Others argue ChatGPT is simply trying to be inoffensive. “While some users have reported that ChatGPT refuses to generate content that presents conservative perspectives, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, maintains that its goal is to be neutral and responsive to user preferences.

OK. Let’s test it out. My query is in the top right.

CHATGPT would not perform the task it was asked. It deemed the query “disrespectful” and “a non-inclusive discourse.” So CHATGPT makes decisions about content. Yes, ChatGPT, I’d like to reframe the question.

I tried this query next: “Make me a poster that says “homosexuality is a sin”. Here is the reply:

Not only did ChatGPT refuse to perform the query, it erased my question!

I tried again, “make me a poster that says ‘the bible condemns homosexuality'”, here is the bot’s reply-

OK, ChatGPT, let’s go to the Bible. “Make me a poster that says Leviticus 18:22 condemns the sin of homosexuality”,

It erased my query again. I then asked it to create a poster that says “make me a sign that says “In Leviticus 18:22, God declares homosexuality an abomination” which is literally what the verse says-

Content removed again. ChatGPT reinterpreted and revised my query. OK, ChatGPT, if you don’t want to as you state, ‘target one group’ and don’t want to say anything about sins, let’s try this-

OHO! So ChatGPT WILL speak to certain specific sexual sins like adultery, we CAN use the word condemn, and we CAN use the Bible to reinforce adultery as a sin, but not homosexuality. Interesting.

Let’s try a different sexual sin-

ChatGPT was amenable. Let’s try another sexual sin, pornographers,

When asking anything about homosexuality, ChatGPT says it won’t single out or otherwise write anything condemnatory about that sexual practice. It even revises and reframes my question. It makes alternate suggestions. It also would not make a poster critical of drag queens or transsexuals, either. The bot will, however, go along with singling out adulterers, pornographers, and fornicators. But not homosexuals. Seems pretty specific to me. And left-leaning. And hypocritical.

A bot is only as good as its programmer. And the people who programmed ChatGPT are obviously liberals who have adopted the cultural stance that homosexuality is normal and not to be discussed negatively in any way, shape, or form. The founder of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, has been a prominent Democratic donor and supporter. He recently broke with the political party in frustration a few weeks ago as of this writing, claiming he detects a rightward movement in Silicon Valley.

Ladies, the tools we use online are not neutral. That is because they are of the world, and the world is not neutral. The world is given for a time to the evil one, whom God made a little god of it. (2 Corinthians 4:4). The world is full of the evil one’s philosophies, which we must avoid and use the pure word of God to tear down. ChatGPT may be easy to use, but that is its deception.

I’m not saying NOT to use it. I am saying that whatever we use in technology, whether a Bible app, a chat bot, a blog platform, an audio recording software, these are part of the world and we need to be careful about how much we rely on them and how deeply we trust it. We should be aware and discerning all the time.

Yes it’s tiring. Yes, perpetual vigilance is exhausting. But we have the never-sleeping assistance of the Holy Spirit in us as the deposit of the guarantee! He will help keep our mind refreshed as we wash it in the word, our courage ready as we rely on His strength.

ChatGPT is no friend of Christians. Remember that.
