Choosing a life partner according to Bible

“O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jer 10:23). The right choice of a marriage partner is not in the one taking the decision, but in God. One very challenging choice a believer has to make is who will be his or her marriage partner.

When five brothers propose to a sister, how would she know whom to pick? What if only one brother proposes in a long time: Does that mean she should say ‘yes’ to him? This is why you should not choose by yourself, or by your senses but let God do it for you. Over the years, God has been choosing for several Christians. One thing is that when God chooses for you, you will have no regrets.

Do not expect the person chosen to be perfect. If you are not perfect, why do you want a perfect partner? It is okay to spell out conditions or qualities you desire in your partner. But God may not necessarily meet all those conditions. When God chooses for you, it is entirely in your best interest.

“For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness” (Heb 12:10). God will not give you a partner that will take you out of His presence. One way of knowing God’s choice is that after marriage, the couple draws closer to God, and walks more uprightly. But anyone who marries and afterwards backslides or grows cold on God, fellowship, or His Word, has most likely missed God’s choice.

In the same vein, when God chooses for you, it is because He wants you to end well. After all, He sees the end from the beginning. Before you say, ‘I do’ at the altar, God knows exactly how that marriage will end. When God chooses for you, He gives you a partner who truly fits you – the bone of your bone, like He did to Adam (Gen 2:23).

The truth is, not every believer can be your partner. God is the God of perfection. If you seek His face and He gives you a partner, receive the fellow with thanksgiving. Some partners prevent their spouses from fulfilling God’s plan for their lives. God will not give you a partner that will hinder you from getting to where He is taking you. When God chooses for you, He will personally be there to back you up until you succeed. Let Him choose for you today.

The state of your heart is very important to God when you ask Him to choose for you. If you are not sincere, He may remain detached.
