Christ Magnified, Now & New Jerusalem

In Philippians 1:20-21 Paul tells us that his hope is “with all boldness, as always, even now Christ will be magnified in my body…for to me, to live is Christ.” To magnify Him is to exhibit His greatness.

The ultimate magnification of Christ is New Jerusalem, but multiple occurrences are mentioned in the New Testament. For example, Paul encourages the Philippians to be “children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as luminaries.” This shining is magnification.

In Acts 19 “the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.” Then through many believers confessing their past evil works and ending them with a burning, “the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed” (v. 20). This was another magnification.

First Peter 2:9 proclaims about the believers in Christ, “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired for a possession, so that you may tell out the virtues of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” This telling out is not only verbally but also by our living of Christ and our shining, as in Philippians.

Christ Himself is the source of His magnification through us. We cannot magnify Him apart from Him. Second Corinthians 2:14 says, “Thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in the Christ and manifests the savor of the knowledge of Him through us in every place.” God manifests/magnifies Christ through us now and will do so to a much greater extent in New Jerusalem.
