[Christian Movie Review] Noah — Biblical Inaccuracies, Theological Concerns, and Hollywood Distortion

A Dangerous Misinterpretation and Distortion Borrowing the Bible's Name

The movie , which drew significant attention for starring Emma Watson (as Ila), effectively only borrows names and motifs from the Bible. In essence and purpose, the film is a work that stands in direct opposition to the Christian faith. Beyond being a simple creative endeavor, it is a result of the director’s profound misunderstandings and prejudices regarding God. As such, it requires careful discernment from Christians.

The Story: A Noah Who Dreams of 'Human Annihilation' Rather Than Salvation

The Noah (Russell Crowe) in this film walks a path entirely different from the figure we know in Scripture. When Ila gives birth to twins inside the Ark, Noah attempts to kill his own newborn grandchildren, driven by his conviction that the human race must be completely wiped out.

The most severe distortion here is that Noah’s objective in the film is 'human destruction' rather than 'human salvation.' In the Bible, people rejected salvation and mocked Noah; however, in the movie, people struggle desperately to survive while Noah is portrayed as the "aggressor" who brutally blocks them and seeks their death. This fundamentally flips the script on the true nature of the Flood judgment described in the Bible.

The Director’s Grave Misunderstanding of God

The greatest issue permeating this film is that the director depicts God solely as a "merciless, cold-blooded judge."

Projection of a False Character: The director portrays God as an impersonal being who is indifferent to human life and death, interested only in the purification of the physical world. This is an insult to the "God of Love" in the Bible, who—even in a world full of sin—patiently waited for sinners and prepared the Ark as a way of salvation to "save even one more person."

Distortion of Sovereignty in Salvation: The film suggests that the reason humanity survived was not because of God's grace, but because of "Noah’s human mercy" in choosing not to kill. This is a staunchly humanistic setting that shifts the sovereignty of salvation from God to man.

Distorted Symbols: The Snake's Skin and Humanism

The symbols in the film twist biblical meanings in a bizarre way:

The Snake's Skin: The depiction of Noah’s lineage passing down a snake’s skin as a sacred relic was highly controversial. In the Bible, the serpent is a symbol of temptation and the Fall. Using it as a tool for spiritual succession caused great discomfort among believers.

Humanity as the Savior: By crediting human compassion for the survival of the race, the film sends a humanistic message that suggests the power of salvation lies within human hands rather than God’s.

Why Use the Biblical Narrative at All?

Aside from its artistic quality, it is difficult to understand the intention behind borrowing a biblical story only to distort it so thoroughly. It is hard to avoid the criticism that the director used the authority of the Bible to justify his personal philosophies—such as radical environmentalism and secular humanism. This treats the Bible as a mere "mythological source," completely ignoring the absolute truth and revelation contained within it.

Why Christians Must Speak Out

Do not be dazzled by the flashy visuals that cause the world to misunderstand God. In an era where media that misleads people about God is overflowing, Christians must not remain silent.

Watchmen of the Truth: To those in the world who misunderstand God as a cruel dictator, we must clearly communicate what God’s true heart is as revealed in the Scriptures.

Discerning Cultural Response: The complacent attitude of "it's just a movie" is dangerous. To prevent a false image of God from taking root in the public's subconscious, we must speak out firmly and wisely based on biblical foundations.

Instead of the "false Noah" in the film, let us be those who boldly proclaim the true, heartfelt plan of salvation found in Genesis and the real meaning of the rainbow promised by God.
