Unjust Grace
Good morning, friends! Day Twenty-Eight! Sometimes we go through this life feeling like we deserve more. We can compare with others and wonder why they seem have more favor than us. But God’s favor is truly unjust grace. We don’t deserve it and yet He gives it freely.
Bible Reading: Romans 9-10
Verse of the day: Romans 9:14 “What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means!”
Word of the day: Injustice. It is the Greek word: ἀδικία (ad-ee-kee’-ah).
This word means: unrighteousness, violating standards of right conduct.
God Wills His Grace
Paul has built a case for our need of salvation in the first 8 chapters and now in chapter 9, Paul is lamenting that his fellow Jewish people have missed the Messiah. And yet God’s sovereignty did not fail when the Jewish people did. And God is not unjust when some are saved and some are not.
Paul quotes Moses from Deuteronomy 32:4 in verse 14 and Exodus 33:19, Exodus 9:16, Exodus 4:21, respectively. Starting in verse 15:
“15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.”
This is a tough passage, right? We don’t like the thought that God can do whatever He wants. But God is Holy and perfect and good. And He is the Creator of everything.
God’s Loving Grace
When we are tempted to think that life is not fair or that God is unjust, we can consider that it was not fair for us to be pardoned, but God judged us as righteous by judging His own Son instead of us.
Application
- Don’t let comparison rob you of contentment.
- God’s purposes are different for each one of us.
