    Hebrews 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. (ESV)

    Jesus Knows Our Weakness

We all have weaknesses. Sometimes it’s physical – our bodies ache, break down, and wear out. Other times it’s emotional or spiritual – we’re tempted, discouraged, or weighed down by guilt. Weakness is part of being human in a fallen world.

And here’s the comfort: Jesus doesn’t look on from a distance. He has shared our humanity. He knows what it is to be tired, hungry, pressed by temptation, and surrounded by suffering.

I love the line in the classic Christmas Hymn O Holy Night:

“He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger.”

Jesus knows your need; he was born into the world to deal with your greatest need.

    Jesus Faced Temptation

Hebrews tells us that Jesus was “tempted in every respect as we are.” That doesn’t mean he faced every single scenario we could imagine, but it does mean he experienced the full weight of testing and temptation. And yet, unlike us, he never sinned.

That matters. If Jesus had sinned, he’d need a Saviour just like us. But because he stood firm, he’s qualified to be our great High Priest – spotless, holy, able to represent us before the Father.

    Jesus Truly Sympathises

Sympathy isn’t just “feeling sorry.” It’s sharing in someone’s experience. Jesus doesn’t just imagine our struggles; he’s entered into them. That’s why he can deal with us gently. He knows our frailty, and he doesn’t condemn those who come to him in faith. Instead, he offers mercy and help.

So, does Jesus really understand you? Yes. Whatever weakness or temptation you face, he’s been there. And because he overcame, he can lift you up and carry you through.

    Reflection

Heavenly Father, thank you that Jesus knows my weakness and sympathises with me. Help me trust him in temptation and find strength in his victory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Do You Feel Accepted or Rejected?

I went to bed, pulled the covers over my head, and had a big ole pity party. Once again, I had been rejected…come in second place…told I wasn’t quite what “they” were looking for. The scarlet letter loomed large. It wasn’t an A like Hester Prynne’s in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book I had read in high school, but a big fat R that I chose to wear when life turned ugly. Read more...

        Sleeping and Waiting

Sleep is crucial to our health. It’s our body’s time to restore itself and make sure we’re ready for the day ahead! Waiting, in a way, is like the “sleep” portion of our faith. While we wait, God works. And imagine all the incredible work He’s doing!
